What Help is Available for Victims of Domestic Violence?
Domestic Violence and the Workplace
If you are a NYS employee and you are a victim of domestic violence:
- Review your agency’s Domestic Violence and the Workplace Policy The policy will outline confidentiality parameters and personnel policies that may be applicable to your situation. In addition it will cover specific ways that your agency can work with you to develop a personal workplace safety plan.
- Contact the staff member identified as a source of domestic violence assistance This person (or their title) and contact information may be listed in your policy, on your intranet and/or on posters around your building. These staff members have completed the OPDV full-day training on Domestic Violence and the Workplace and are willing to assist you in a confidential manner to create safety for you in the workplace. In addition they have valuable information on experts in your community that can help you safety plan for you and your family.
- If you are unable to identify the staff member to assist you within your agency please contact the OPDV Domestic Violence and the Workplace Program Administrator, Joan Faxon, at 518-457-5740. All inquiries are confidential.
- If you are not yet ready to discuss the issue with anyone at work, resources can be found on the OPDV website.
If you are NOT a NYS employee and you are a victim of domestic violence:
- Check to see if your employer has a domestic violence policy. If so, review for personnel and workplace safety policies that may be applicable to your situation. Make certain you clearly understand the confidentiality parameters.
