Domestic Violence Training for Child Welfare Staff

Training Description:
This interactive two-day training provides a brief summary of the legal responsibilities
of the local districts to victims of domestic violence and a comprehensive
overview of adult domestic violence including the scope, nature, and dynamics
of the problem.
The training explores the impact of domestic violence on children, the relationship between child abuse/neglect and domestic violence and the value of this information in the development of service plans. In addition, intervention strategies for all family members will be addressed as well as the use of a case study practice. The interactive simulation, "In Her Shoes," is integrated into Day Two of the Child Welfare Training to assist caseworkers in understanding issues and barriers women who are abused face when seeking help from a variety of systems and service providers.
Who Should Attend:
Designed for line staff and supervisors who work in Preventive, Foster Care and Adoption Units as well as local voluntary agency staff. Child Protective staff is also invited to attend, but this training does not satisfy the requirement for state mandated domestic violence training.

What you will learn:
Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:
- Identify possible signs of domestic violence in the families they work with.
- Identify possible risks to children living with an abusive parent.
- Identify excuses used by abusers.
- Implement the 4-step intervention strategy.
- Make appropriate community referrals for parents or children.
How you will benefit:
Staff will be equipped to effectively identify and respond to suspicions or disclosures of domestic violence and provide support to enhance the safety of children and the non-abusive parent.
