OPDV Bulletin: Health Care Workgroup

The Health Care Workgroup, a subcommittee of the Domestic Violence Community Coordination Council in Glens Falls (see article), was formed to develop domestic violence policies and address related issues of concern to health care agencies. Currently the group is comprised of seven different health care organizations ranging in size from a small family practice to an entire hospital. After setting group goals – primarily that the policies be user-friendly and consistent – they got to work. They used various tools and training, including a Policy Development Workshop, the Blueprint for Policy Development from Duluth, and the Protocol Analysis Tool from OPDV and NYSCADV, to produce four completed policies.

A well-publicized kickoff event on March 27th released the resulting product: “Warren & Washington Counties’ Health Care Response to Domestic Violence: Model Policies and Partnership Plan.” Binders were available and included an introduction, letters of support, sample tools, health care regulations, the four policies, and resources. They also included a schedule of upcoming health care trainings. One of the aspects of “Partnership” is a commitment to provide training to health care professionals in the community. Attendees get two hours of continuing education credits. Printing and supplies were donated by the Target Corporation.
